Getting my priorities straight + avoiding the a$$holes!

roar! Jan 22, 2020

*OH MY GOODNESS* is what I thought on Sunday as I was rushing to get to a workshop. It was early, my brain just didn't seem to kick into gear... damn you, "no caffeine, no dairy, no red meat, no wheat, no alcohol, no refined sugars" detox. I am convinced I would've been much more awake with some caffeine in my system.

Everything just seemed off.

One thing is for sure, I am not perfect. I do my best to stay calm, honour my values, follow my dreams and live life to the full, but sometimes life gets in the way and all those loving kind intentions are challenged.

The following is exactly what happened (true story ;)):

I had a workshop to attend on Sunday morning and was running slightly late, I then got confused about directions and took a wrong turn only to have the van driver behind me (he literally came out of nowhere) approaching me really fast, overtake me and then brake test me, so I had to stop.

The tiniest man (in length and height) then hopped out of his car and very aggressively approached me, clearly ready to fight... My window was still frozen and I couldn't pull it down, so I opened my door (properly panicking by now)... "is that the way to drive?" he yelled, "some indication would have been nice"

Although my heart was racing, I stayed calm and apologised (luckily for him I was caffeine-free - LOL). Very disappointed because he didn't get his fight, he marched off, hopped in his car and sped away. I then watched the way he drove all the way up the road, overtaking, hooting, braking... clearly an angry man.

While still reeling from that incident in stationery traffic it finally started to move. As I started to pull away, I realised that there was a girl who hadn't looked or noticed the traffic moving, stepping in front of me. I nearly drove into her .. OMG! I wasn't even 10 minutes from home and already I was wondering if there was a theme developing this morning?

No don't be silly, just chill, there is time. So I continued on my journey. 10 minutes later I had to pee so pulled into a service station. Another 20 minutes in, I took a wrong turn due to roadworks and diversions. ARGGGG - should I have just stayed in bed?

I eventually found the venue and then struggled to park in this poky little car park, only two spaces available, one of them I could squeeze into. Slowly, patiently, I did.

By now, properly late...

Ever had one of these days?

What message was the universe trying to send me that I clearly wasn't hearing?

To go back to bed?

To slow down?

To screw the detox?

If nothing else, I got to sing a silly song with my friend as we headed home early via our local to discuss the weirdness of the day.

It was only on reflection that I realised that life is just like that for all of us, unexpected twists and turns in the road ahead. All we can do is follow our best intentions, navigate the map we have laid out for our best life. And try to take everything in our stride.

On Sunday afternoon, I arrived home and was greeted by my beautiful boys - soooo happy to see me (especially the youngest) - and we spent the rest of the evening together as a family.

And then I got it...

A mere three weeks into 2020, I had already broken my promise - to myself - that Sundays will be protected and treated as family time, to relax and refuel. No workshops, no meetings... (hopefully) no exposure to a$$holes... just time for me, Heinie and the boys.

I think I'll stay in bed after all this Sunday... and enjoy a double espresso!

One thing is for sure I am practising how to be kind - to myself and others - and am constantly reminded of my favourite quote.

"When given the choice between being right and being kind choose kind"  WONDER, the movie

- Marilise
