Where do you focus your energy: on DOing or BEing?
Jan 20, 2026Where do you focus your energy? On DOing or BEing?
This isn't a trick question. Most of us answer honestly: DOing more. Always DOing more.
We've built entire careers on it. More meetings, more deliverables, more performance targets, more hours at the desk proving we're committed. We measure ourselves by how much we accomplish, how many boxes we tick, how busy we look, how quickly we respond to emails at midnight. We wear exhaustion like a badge of honour and treat rest like something we'll get to once we've earned it.
And we're exhausted.
When our focus lives in the relentless pursuit of DOing more, that's where all our energy drains. Into proving. Into performing. Into an endless cycle that never actually fills us up.
I see this every day with corporate clients. Brilliant leaders who've climbed to the top of their organisations, and they're running on empty. They live entirely in their heads - the DO more headspace - where success equals output and rest feels like failure.
The statistics tell the story we're all living. Global employee engagement has dropped to just 21%. We're losing €438 billion annually to workplace disengagement. But these numbers miss the real cost: brilliant people who've forgotten they're worthy of work that honours their whole selves, not just their productive selves.
The whispers started years ago. Your body asking for rest. Your heart asking for meaning. Your soul asking for something more. But when you're focused on DOing, those whispers get drowned out by the next deadline, the next target, the next urgent email.
What happens when we ignore the whispers? They become screams. And then our body stops us in our tracks. Burnout. Disconnection. The peculiar emptiness of achieving everything you thought you wanted whilst feeling nothing like you imagined.
The invitation to BE more
Here's what shifts everything: drop into the heart space. BE more, more often.
This isn't about doing less (though that might happen). This is about where you place your focus, because where focus goes, energy flows.
When you focus on BEing more, you become a creator rather than just an achiever. You move from proving your worth to expressing it. From performing your value to embodying it.
We are human beings, after all. Not human doings.
The opportunity isn't to abandon ambition or stop achieving. The opportunity is to pursue your biggest dreams whilst knowing you're already whole. To want more whilst recognising you're already enough.
Sound contradictory? That's the paradox we'll explore more deeply in the coming weeks. For now, consider this: you're meant for more AND you're already more than enough. Both truths matter. Both energies count.
Where your focus goes, your energy flows
DO more focus leads to depletion. You're constantly trying to fill a hole that output alone can never fill. You strive, you prove, you perform - and still feel empty despite the accolades.
BE more focus leads to creation. You're not trying to become worthy through achievement. You already know your worth. Now you're free to create from that place of wholeness rather than from lack.
The transformation isn't about choosing one over the other. Raise the energy on both sides. Let your ambition flow from wholeness rather than from proving. Let your achievements emerge from who you are, not from who you think you need to become.
This is the energy upgrade that changes everything.
Your turn
Recognise this week where your attention goes. When you're in meetings, responding to emails, making decisions - are you operating from the DO more headspace or dropping into the BE more heart space?
The patterns you recognise will tell you everything you need to know about where your energy is flowing. And once you see it, you can choose differently.
