The TOXIC TRIO

roar! tame the bully Oct 09, 2019

Ever tried eating pancakes without maple syrup and lemon, or peanut butter toast without honey or jam .. Ha - 'yes, I do it all the time Marilise!' .. ok .. now I know these things belong together in my world and I'm sure you have a few non negotiable combinations for things you love to eat .. what about gin without tonic and grapefruit, or steak without chips and salad, or spaghetti without the bolognese. You get my point, right?

For something to 'work' it needs to be combined with other elements to make it what it is. Together the flavours make the dish what it is!

This is no different in life, there is a relationship between certain elements that combine to create something .. nourishing or toxic. The scenario I want to talk about is what I call the toxic trio, found alive and well in our environments.

With all three in place feeding off each other, they create a perfect breeding ground for unpleasant working conditions for everyone.

In writing my book and through my research, I realised that this was not something unique to my situation but rather it appears to be a silent epidemic. I discovered three parties contributing to the scenarios described to me time and time again.

  • They are the bully
  • The person being bullied and
  • The environment

Without these three in place bullying simply wouldn't exist.

Just like the analogy of the bad apple ...

One bad apple spoils the (whole) barrel
It only takes one person, thing, element, etc., to ruin the entire group, situation, project, etc. Refers to the fact that a rotting apple can cause other apples in close proximity to begin to rot as well.  https://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/

The question to ask is can you identify the toxic trio in operation in your environment?

Take a moment to sit back and observe today, the meeting you attend, the interaction you see, the conversation you overhear.
