Blue Broccoli and Nanobots: Awesome ideas for future careers

amazing life May 01, 2019

I was so inspired when I stumbled across the opportunity to invest in this children's book that shows girls can do anything, from neurosurgeon to intelligence analyst, web developer to aerospace engineer. Created by, Bryony Mathew

This book touched me on so many levels that I thought I would share this with you, the main aim of the book is to empower young girls to believe they can be anything they want to be.

It was around the time of my PWC Alumni talk that I stumbled across this opportunity. My talk was all about completing the human firewall and it occurred to me that we must teach our children from a young age that they can do and be anything they want to be and doing what we can, to encourage and educate them.

In today's society, girls are conditioned to be 'perfect' and boys are conditioned to be 'brave' - the book aims to dispel some of those early myths which appealed to me. Plus the characters are boisterous and not typical so very diverse and inclusive, it got a big thumbs up from me.

So I took part in the Kickstarter campaign for this book and automatically fell in love with the idea of being able to influence how one of the characters was portrayed. There were a few to choose from but the one that stood out to me was Ella - an African girl.

Having African roots myself I know how formidable we are and what it feels like to overcome adversity, the colour of our skin or our ethnic background is irrelevant. We come in all shapes and sizes and are a force to be reckoned with, so I fell in love with her.

Designing her character was so much fun, it ticked the creative box for me, bringing me immense pleasure in the process. I was able to choose the pattern of her clothing and design the overall look and feel of Ella, she is amazing!

My sister Elsabet has a daughter named Karli and I have mentioned her at the back of the book as one of the children that will change the world ... so this book has a very special place in my heart as a result.
