LOYALTY is all I had left ...

study on workplace culture Apr 18, 2019

Friday can't come quickly enough this week ...

I feel drained, exhausted like I've simply run out of steam ...

I've had a serious sense of humour failure this week ...

Everything seems too much and I just want to run and hide !!

That was my narrative not so long ago ...

I was facing a very challenging time at work where nothing made sense anymore and that no matter how much progress we made it was never enough, it was as though we were running but moving backwards. I felt numb at the end of every day. I questioned my reasons for being there. I knew I had to take care of myself and those around me because we were in it together. I would never leave someone out in the cold! If something presented us with a challenge, we tackled it together and resolved it together.

At the time I was struggling to get myself into work, to face my fears and be willing to take another bruising, I was fighting a losing battle and it was dawning on me that no matter what I did, nothing would be enough ... BUT ... my thoughts were about my team!

I got to the point where all I had left was Loyalty ... the thing that kept me getting up and going in was the fact that I cared about those people around me that depended on me to steer the ship.

Loyalty, in general use, is a devotion and faithfulness to a nation, cause, philosophy, country, group, or person. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loyalty

All I wanted to see was my team recognised for all their hard work, to feel proud of what they had achieved and to feel valued and appreciated for everything they did for the business. This is the way I roll and I do everything possible to ensure that each team member is given the support they need to do their job effectively. I am devoted and loyal to the end because I truly believe that together we can deliver great things and by taking care of the people in it and understanding what makes them tick ensures they turn up for work, committed and looking forward to what they can bring to the day. To feel like the work they do makes a difference.

We all need to feel valued, we need to learn new things to keep us engaged and moving forward, to be part of a team that cares for each other and gets the job done is an incredible experience, this was my objective.

I really had to pull myself out of the headlights ...

I was sinking fast and just needed to take a breath ...

The joy had gone ...

Something had to change!

INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE IN MY STUDY ON WORKPLACE CULTURE

I need your support, please. I am conducting a study for my book, Roar! How to tame the bully, and I would be very grateful if you would participate in my study.

In my eBook, you will have read about my own experience with workplace bullying and its toll on my relationships and my health (mentally and physically). That is why I am determined to help others recognise the signs of workplace bullying early on and to take action before it is too late.

If you have worked in a situation where you have been the Witness or Target of:

1. behaviour that is intentionally negative and malicious, whether physical or emotional, from one or more persons,
2. negative behaviour that is consistently aggressive and persistent, and
3. behaviour that is driven by another person’s desire to obtain control.

Then I would like to invite you to participate in this study.

This survey is being sent to individuals working in organisations across all industries worldwide. Your participation will help assure that the results generated present an accurate reflection of the prevalence of bullying behaviour in workplace cultures today.

The survey is anonymous and treated in the strictest confidence. You may refuse to answer any question or quit the survey at any time. It will take approximately 10-20 minutes to complete.

I’d love to get industry and country-specific analysis too, so the more responses I get, the better, so please feel free to send this link to your colleagues.

Thank you in advance,

Marilise de Villiers

PS: Although there may be no direct benefit to the participant, there are possible benefits to organisations and society as a whole. Leaders, managers, and human resource personnel may learn techniques for identifying, investigating, and managing workplace bullying. Potential benefits to employees would include improved mental, physical and emotional well-being. Raising awareness of workplace bullying could potentially benefit leaders and organisations by increasing employee engagement and productivity.
